What is Crossfit?

Greg Glassman, a former gymnast, founded CrossFit®, Inc. in 2000. As longtime coach of elite athletes, Coach Glassman found that the best way to achieve optimal fitness was not through specialization, but rather through “constantly varied, functional movements performed at high intensity.”  Our specialty is not specializing.

Constantly varied, functional movements
performed at high intensity

Constantly Varied
As with life, our workouts bring new challenges everyday.  That means that every day brings a different workout (or “WOD”), incorporating combinations of movements specifically designed to improve overall fitness and general physical preparedness. At CrossFit Kinesis, you will jump rope, climb ropes, swing kettle bells, and flip tires. You will work on pull-ups, muscle ups, handstands, pushups, and handstand pushups. You will learn to properly perform squats, dips, cleans, jerks, snatches, and deadlifts. You will incorporate rowing, running, sled pushes, and box jumps. This will deliver a fitness that is broad, general, and inclusive. You will be training for life’s unknown and unknowable.

Functional Movement
Functional movements are universal motor patterns that resemble activities we perform in everyday life. Much of what we do in our workouts mirrors those activities. To the casual observer, flipping a tire looks like something from a World’s Strongest Man competition. But, if you’ve ever moved a mattress up a flight of stairs, you already know the movement. Performing a dumbbell snatch may seem odd, but consider what your body does when you lift your carryon into a plane’s overhead bin. If you’ve ever lifted a heavy bag of dog food into the bed of a pickup truck, no one needs to tell you the importance of a properly performed dead lift. At CrossFit Kinesis, you will learn how to perform these movements in the safest, most-efficient way possible in order to best handle life’s demands.

High Intensity
Intensity is the most important variable in any workout – it is the key ingredient for getting results. How heavy, hard, and/or fast do you want to go? People are often skeptical that short workouts done at a much higher intensity than they are used to can produce faster, better results in a fraction of the time. However, results don’t lie. CrossFit Kinesis’s programming is designed to be universally scalable, allowing us to control load and intensity based on your fitness level.  We believe that the needs of Olympic athletes and our grandparents differ only by degree, not by kind.
